CHAMPAIGN, IL – Roadways in central and southern Illinois, including I-57, are at risk tonight as the area is covered in snow. The Illinois Department of Transportation reports that I-57 and most of the surrounding highways are covered with snow and ice, making travel extremely dangerous.
Drivers on I-57 from Champaign to Effingham and beyond are experiencing low visibility due to blowing snow, with wind gusts reaching 35 mph. These conditions are contributing to icy areas, especially on bridges and overpasses, where there is a risk of freezing. Additional snow accumulation is expected overnight, making conditions worse Monday morning.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the area, warning of 2 to 5 inches of snowfall overnight. Northerly winds are likely to continue, causing blowing snow and significantly reduced visibility. The temperature will be around 20 degrees, due to the wind the coolness will reduce in the youth.
IDOT advises travelers to avoid unnecessary trips tonight. People who must drive should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance and check road conditions before setting out. Drivers are encouraged to use caution on I-57 and other major routes including I-72 and US 45, where conditions remain poor.
Looking ahead, icy conditions will remain due to cold temperatures throughout Monday, with bitter cold winds continuing through the middle of the week. Crews will continue to treat roads, but travelers should expect delays and plan accordingly.
