SOUTHEAST OHIO – Heavy snow and ice will create hazardous travel conditions across the region through Tuesday morning as the region remains in the grip of a significant winter storm. Roads could be dangerous with up to 10 inches of snow accumulating and ice accumulation making bridges and overpasses particularly dangerous.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston, the storm will continue until late Tuesday at 1 a.m., affecting counties including Athens, Gallia and Washington. Snow accumulations of up to three-tenths of an inch are expected, causing widespread power outages and damage to tree limbs. Winds can reach up to 35 mph, making dangerous conditions even worse.
Travelers are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, as driving on slick roads may become almost impossible. Those who must travel should carry an emergency kit including a flashlight, food and water. Local officials urge residents to check road conditions by calling 511 before heading out.
Monday morning and evening travel is expected to be severely affected. Crews are working to pre-treat roads, but heavy rainfall may limit their effectiveness. Schools and businesses may face closures or delays, so residents should monitor updates from local officials.
Since temperatures remain below zero, conditions are unlikely to improve significantly until the storm ends. Stay up to date on weather developments by following the National Weather Service or local news outlets.
