WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Meteorologist Jake Dunne says it is a seasonably cold morning across Kansas with wake-up temperatures in the teens and 20s, and the day ahead will follow suit. Underneath mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies, we will see near normal highs in the upper 30s and lower 40s.
Expect a dry Friday night to give way to a mixture of drizzle (south of Wichita) and freezing drizzle in the metro area and farther north. Any precipitation during the day should be on the light side, but slick spots are expected.
Conditions will rapidly go downhill on Saturday night. Heavier freezing rain and sleet will transition to all snow by Sunday morning. Travel, especially along and north of highway 400 will be difficult, if not impossible. Significant ice accumulation, and possible power outages will be followed by several inches of snow accumulation in Wichita while areas farther north see up to a foot of snowfall.
After the winter storm moves out, Arctic air will move in. Highs in the teens and 20s will be accompanied by overnight temperatures in the single digits, both above and below zero, and dangerous wind chills at times.
