PITTSBURGH, PA – Residents of western Pennsylvania should prepare for hazardous conditions as a winter storm moves through the area Monday evening. There is a possibility of heavy snowfall, hailstorm and light snow cover, which will make travel dangerous.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a winter storm warning is in effect from 7 p.m. Sunday until 7 p.m. Monday. Areas including Greene County, Ligonier and Donegal could accumulate between 5 and 8 inches of snow. A layer of ice on bridges and overpasses will create particularly slow conditions for the morning and evening commute Monday.
Drivers have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel. If travel is necessary, use extreme caution and ensure vehicles are suitable for winter. Officials recommend leaving early to account for delays and reducing speeds to accommodate low visibility and icy surfaces.
The storm is expected to move across east-central Ohio, southwestern Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, affecting major roadways such as I-79 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. High winds may further reduce visibility due to snow drifts.
After the storm subsides on Monday evening, conditions will remain cool with lows dropping into the 20s. Tuesday and Wednesday will be partly cloudy, but temperatures will remain near zero, leading to snowy conditions.
