Richmond, VA – A major winter storm is set to impact central and eastern Virginia by Tuesday morning, bringing heavy snow, ice and high winds to the area. Residents are urged to exercise caution as travel conditions are expected to be hazardous.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning from 4 p.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. Tuesday. Total snowfall is expected to range from 2 to 7 inches depending on location, with northern areas like Louisa County and the Northern Neck receiving the heaviest snowfall. Snow accumulations up to 0.2 inches are also possible, making roadways hazardous. Gusty winds gusting up to 40 mph may reduce visibility and disrupt power supplies.
Officials have warned travelers to plan ahead as snowfall is expected to significantly impact travel on Monday morning and evening. Residents should avoid non-essential travel, but those who must drive should keep an emergency kit in their vehicle, including food, water and a flashlight.
By Tuesday morning, the storm will begin to subside, but some roads may remain slippery due to lingering snow and ice. Temperatures are expected to remain below zero through the middle of the week, which will delay cleanup efforts. Road crews will be working around the clock to treat major highways, including I-95 and local routes.
Residents are advised to monitor weather updates and call 511 for real-time road conditions. Stay informed and prioritize safety during this winter storm.
