NORTH CAROLINA – Freezing rain is expected to create hazardous conditions in the northern mountains of North Carolina from Sunday afternoon into Monday. Motorists and residents are urged to be prepared for icy roads, power outages and potentially dangerous travel.
According to the National Weather Service, a winter weather advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. Sunday until 1 a.m. Monday. Freezing rain can cause ice accumulations ranging from one-tenth of an inch to nearly a quarter of an inch. Winds gusting up to 30 mph are expected to worsen conditions, especially in areas such as Avery, Yancey and Mitchell counties.
Travel is expected to be hazardous, especially on untreated roads, bridges and footpaths. Extensive traffic delays may occur Monday morning as icy conditions persist. Residents are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel and keep emergency kits including blankets, water and flashlights in their vehicles.
The weight of accumulated snow may cause tree branches and power lines to come down, resulting in local power outages. Officials recommend charging devices before the storm and preparing for potential disruptions.
Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to rise slightly on Tuesday, which will ease the conditions. However, residents should monitor updated forecasts and heed all advisories.
The five-day forecast predicts dry conditions through midweek, with highs near 40 through Wednesday. However, the immediate focus remains on staying safe as heavy rains are lashing the area.
