GOODLAND, KS – A significant winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow to northwest Kansas through Sunday, causing hazardous travel conditions and dangerously cold winds.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Goodland, a winter storm warning is in effect for Sheridan, Gove, Norton and Graham counties until 6 p.m. Sunday. Sheridan and Gove counties are expected to see 4 to 9 inches of snow accumulation, while Norton and Graham counties could see up to 9 inches of snow. Snow accumulations up to one-tenth of an inch are also expected.
Freezing fog and drizzle will continue through Saturday afternoon, with highs and lows in the 20s. It is expected that as the temperature drops further, the rain will turn into snowfall on Saturday evening. Winds will blow 15 to 25 mph Sunday morning, with gusts up to 35 mph, causing blowing snow and reduced visibility. The wind chill value may drop below minus 10 to 15.
Drivers are urged to consider alternative travel plans, especially on Interstate 70, where delays are possible. If travel is unavoidable, keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including a flashlight, food, and water. Call 511 for the latest road conditions in Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado.
