Austin, TX – A severe cold wave is set to hit south-central Texas on Sunday, causing significant drops in temperatures and increasing fire danger. Residents should be prepared for below freezing conditions Sunday night, with low temperatures falling into the mid-20s by Monday night.
According to the National Weather Service, Sunday will start with cloudy skies and a high near 75°F before rising in the afternoon. Winds up to 30 mph may occur as cold, dry air arrives in the area. Fire weather conditions will intensify due to low humidity and high winds. Drivers on major highways, including I-35, are advised to be aware of possible light fog Sunday morning.
By Monday, skies will remain clear, but highs will struggle to reach 50°F, while nighttime lows will drop to the low 20s. Sub-freezing conditions are expected to persist till the middle of the week. Tuesday and Wednesday will be sunny but cold, with highs in the mid 40s and overnight lows below zero.
The extended forecast shows there is a slight chance of precipitation Thursday through Friday, although forecasters say the type of precipitation remains uncertain. Residents should monitor updates as the cold weather increases the risk of icy conditions.
