Des Moines, IA – A powerful winter storm is set to bring heavy snowfall and high winds to southern Iowa beginning Saturday night, causing hazardous travel conditions through Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a winter storm warning is in effect for Decatur, Ringgold and Taylor counties from 9 p.m. Saturday until 3 a.m. Monday. Forecasts call for total snowfall of 4 to 8 inches, with the heaviest snowfall near the Missouri border. Winds could gust up to 35 mph, potentially blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility to near whiteout conditions.
The NWS noted that snowfall amounts will vary rapidly within counties due to dry air coming in from the north. This variability depends on the exact track of the storm, which can change and alter forecasts.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel. For those who must step out, emergency supplies like torches, food and water should be carried. Travelers can check road conditions through the Iowa 511 app or website.
The storm is expected to end by Monday morning, but its impact on roads and visibility could last for a long time.
