GRAND JUNCTION, CO – A significant winter storm is moving across Colorado’s mountain ranges, bringing heavy snowfall and dangerous conditions to major roads including I-70. Travelers are urged to exercise extreme caution as blizzard conditions and high winds may cause near whiteout conditions throughout the day.
According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snowfall will occur in the central and southern Colorado mountains today and continue through Sunday. Snowfall rates can exceed an inch per hour in some areas, with high-elevation roads becoming especially dangerous. The lower valleys, including parts of Grand Junction, may see a mix of light snow or wintry weather.
Temperatures will be cool today, reaching a high of 44°F before dropping to a low of 23°F tonight. By the evening winds will shift from southeast to northwest, increasing the risk of freezing winds.
Sunday’s forecast calls for clear skies and calm winds but a cold high with a high of 42°F. Snow showers could return late Monday night, leading to another cold snap through the middle of the week. Temperatures will range from highs in the 40s to lows in the teens through Wednesday.
Drivers should be prepared for delays and make sure their vehicles are prepared for winter. The National Weather Service recommends avoiding travel during extreme snowfall and having emergency supplies ready if road conditions are poor.
