Albuquerque, NM – The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for large parts of New Mexico, including the central Rio Grande Valley, the eastern Central Plains and other areas. The warning is in effect from 11am to 6pm on Saturday due to conditions favorable for rapid fire spread.
A storm system moving across the Central Rockies is bringing dry and unseasonably warm air, combined with gusts as high as 50 mph, according to the National Weather Service. Relative humidity levels are expected to drop to 7%, further increasing the risk. Affected areas include the Northeastern Plains, the Sandia and Manzano Mountains, and the Central Highlands.
Officials have warned that any fire that starts under these conditions could spread rapidly. Burning outside the house is strictly prohibited. The winds are expected to shift towards north-west by evening as a cold front from the Pacific Ocean will pass, causing slight improvement in conditions after sunset.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and take precautions to prevent wildfires. Local fire departments and emergency services have been alerted to the increasing danger.
