Kansas City, MO – A powerful winter storm is expected to blanket much of the Midwest with heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain this weekend, causing significant travel disruptions and potentially dangerous conditions. Whiteout conditions are likely across several states, including Missouri, Kansas, Indiana, and Kentucky, starting late Saturday and continuing into Monday.
According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snowfall is projected along and north of Interstate 70, where accumulations of 8-12 inches are likely by Sunday night. Wind gusts exceeding 40 mph will reduce visibility to near-zero in some areas, creating hazardous driving conditions.
In the Mid-South and Ohio Valley, freezing rain is a growing concern, with as much as half an inch of ice accumulation expected in parts of Kentucky and Tennessee. This could lead to widespread power outages and tree damage, with repair efforts likely delayed by icy roads.
Temperatures will hover near freezing for much of the storm, complicating snow removal efforts and extending the storm’s impact. Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel and prepare for potential outages by securing emergency supplies such as food, water, batteries, and blankets.
Looking ahead, colder air will settle across the Midwest early next week, keeping icy conditions in place through Tuesday. However, temperatures are expected to moderate slightly by midweek, with some relief in sight for impacted regions.
Stay updated on road conditions and forecast changes by visiting the National Weather Service website or following your local Department of Transportation. Drivers should equip vehicles with emergency kits and inform others of their travel plans.
