Des Moines, IA – A winter storm is set to hit southern Iowa tonight, bringing up to 8 inches of snowfall in some areas. Travel disruptions are likely as the heaviest snowfall targets counties including Decatur, Ringgold and Taylor on the Missouri border. Winds as high as 35 mph can worsen conditions by creating blowing and drifting snow.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snowfall will begin late Saturday evening and continue through Sunday, tapering off by Monday morning. The highest accumulations are expected in the southern portions of these counties. Due to the storm’s steep gradient, northern parts may see much less visibility. Motorists are urged to check the Iowa 511 app or dial 511 for real-time road conditions and avoid unnecessary travel.
Detailed forecast:
, tonight: Snowfall begins after 9 p.m., with accumulations of 4-8 inches of snow and winds reaching 20 mph. Visibility is expected to be reduced and roads will become dangerous.
, sunday: Snow continues, mainly in the morning, and intermittent rain continues into the evening. Temperatures will be around 17°F, with winds up to 24 mph making it cooler.
, monday: It will be mostly sunny but cold, with a high near 19°F. Residual snow can form slick spots on untreated surfaces.
, Tuesday: Partly sunny with a high of 19°F. Overnight lows near 3°F.
, Wednesday: Highs around 15°F under mostly sunny skies.
If travel is unavoidable the NWS recommends keeping emergency supplies in vehicles and monitoring updates as storm conditions change. Residents of southern Iowa should be prepared for challenging conditions, especially on major roads like U.S. Highway 69 and Interstate 35.
