INDIANAPOLIS, IN – A powerful winter storm will bring heavy snow, ice and high winds to central and southern Indiana beginning Sunday morning, potentially creating hazardous travel conditions and power outages.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Indianapolis, a winter storm warning is in effect for southern counties from 7 a.m. Sunday to 1 p.m. Monday, with a warning starting at 10 a.m. Sunday for central areas. Snow accumulations are expected to range from 4 to 8 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. Additionally, southern counties could see up to one-tenth of an inch of snow, increasing the risk of power outages. Winds of 30 to 35 mph will further reduce visibility.
The NWS advises residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. People who must drive should take precautions, including carrying an emergency kit with a flashlight, food, and water. Roads, bridges and overpasses are expected to be slick and dangerous, especially during the Monday morning commute.
Meteorologists have urged Indiana residents to prepare for possible power outages and difficult travel conditions. Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates and use 511 for real-time road conditions.
