DMV Mistakenly Sends 38,000 Postcards with Wrong Vehicle Registration Totals

WPBN: According to information, the Colorado Department of Revenue sent reminders for the renewal of car registrations to 38,000 registered owners last month. The amounts of the fees included in the reminders were erroneous.

According to Elizabeth Kosar, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Revenue, which is in charge of the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the state’s computer system made an error in calculating the costs for some renewals that occurred in December and January. Since then, the state has made the necessary corrections.

Once Ryland Feno discovered that the fines he put on his postcard were approximately $100 lower than the amount he actually owed, he contacted Steve On Your Side through his phone.

“When I reached out to the [Jefferson County] DMV, they let me know that there was a mistake that was made, and I would just be forced to pay the higher amount,” he stated.

On Feno’s renewal postcard, it was stated that the fees for his 2023 Kia Telluride amounted to total $683. It was $795, according to him, when he went to the Department of Motor Vehicles website to pay the charge.

‘I was kind of planning around this amount right here, just to make sure that I got all my things taken care of for all the holidays,” Feno stated. “And when I went online, I got quite the surprise that it was much higher than I anticipated.”

The Jeffco Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) informed Feno of the error that was made by the state through an online chat.

“You kind of feel powerless when the government is telling you that you owe one amount and then it’s a much higher amount,” he stated. “You don’t really have many options.”

Specifically, Kosar stated that the faulty postcards were intended for renewals in the months of December and January.

“The courtesy renewal cards that went out for December and January were printed prior to the system fix going into place, which created some inaccurate courtesy renewal cards,””Kosar stated.

Only 38,000 of the approximately 845,000 postcards that were sent during that time period were considered to be affected by the inaccuracy. According to Kosar, this constitutes around 4.5% of the total number of postcards that were sent.

Feno reasoned that the error in computation would have an effect on other people as well.

“There’s no notification letting you know that they made a mistake,” Feno said. “There was no advertisement on the website, like a little chat box saying that there may be a mistake.”

According to Kosar, that is being thought upon.

“The state is sending letters to the impacted constituents, informing them of the discrepancy and encouraging them to renew online, at a kiosk, or in person at their county office to ensure an accurate transaction,” she stated.

Feno expressed his hope that his Department of Motor Vehicles would agree to the price that was initially advertised. It’s possible that you can imagine how that turned out.

“If you were at a restaurant or if you went to a store and you saw a sticker price, you’re expecting to kind of pay that price,” he stated. “So I tried to see if they would honor that amount for me, and no such luck.”
