579 animals die from smoke inhalation in Dallas pet shopping center fire

Tragedy strikes Plaza Latina shopping center

A devastating fire at Plaza Latina, a shopping center in Northwest Dallas, resulted in the deaths of 579 animals due to smoke inhalation, Dallas Fire-Rescue officials reported on Friday. The tragedy unfolded in the early hours of the morning, leaving the community shaken.

Fire details and response

The fire, which broke out around 9 a.m., prompted a two-alarm response from Dallas Fire Rescue. It took 45 firefighters approximately two hours to bring the flames under control by 11 a.m., according to Jason Evans, spokesperson for the department. Despite their efforts, all the animals inside the pet shop succumbed to smoke inhalation.

“While DFR personnel did search and attempt rescue, all animals in the shop unfortunately perished due to smoke inhalation,” Evans said in a statement.

Animals lost in the fire

Among the 579 animals that perished were small birds, chickens, hamsters, two dogs, and two cats. The flames never directly reached the animals, but the intense smoke proved fatal.

The fire caused extensive damage to the large, one-story shopping center, including a partially collapsed roof. Plaza Latina houses a variety of small businesses and is a local hub for Latin goods and services.

Community reaction and calls for support

In the aftermath of the fire, the shopping center’s Facebook page described Plaza Latina as “a place where people can go to eat, and buy all sorts of Latin goods and services.” A post in Spanish called for prayers for the families affected by the incident.

No human injuries were reported

Fortunately, no people were injured in the fire. However, the loss of so many animals has left a deep impact on the community and raised concerns about safety protocols in similar establishments.

Previous tragedies

This incident follows other recent tragedies involving fires in retail or residential spaces, further underscoring the importance of fire safety measures to protect both human and animal lives.
