ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Record-breaking highs are expected across central and western New Mexico on Friday, with temperatures reaching 20 degrees above normal. Residents should prepare for high winds and severe fire weather conditions Saturday as a Red Flag Warning remains in effect.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), dry conditions coupled with winds gusting up to 30 mph will significantly increase fire danger. Avoid outdoor burning and activities that could create sparks, such as welding or throwing away cigarette butts, especially in warning areas, including Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Clovis.
On Saturday, the temperature will drop slightly to around 65 degrees, with clear skies in the afternoon. However, colder air will enter the region beginning Sunday, dropping the high to 52 degrees with northwest winds of 10 mph.
Next week is bringing the possibility of winter weather. NWS forecasts indicate the Albuquerque area could see light snow Tuesday morning, with greater chances late Tuesday night into Wednesday. Snow accumulation remains uncertain, but cold temperatures are guaranteed, with lows falling into the 20s.
Travelers on I-25 and I-40 should stay updated on conditions and prepare for possible delays. Monday is expected to be dry and sunny, use the day to complete any outdoor activities before cool, wet conditions arrive.
