JACKSON, MS – Central Mississippi will face unsettled weather over the weekend as severe thunderstorms, high winds and dangerously cold temperatures are expected through Sunday. Residents along Interstate 55 should prepare for damaging wind gusts and sharp drops in temperatures early next week.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, there is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms Sunday afternoon and evening. These storms can bring winds up to 60 mph, hail, and isolated tornadoes. Drivers should use caution on I-55 and avoid travel during the peak of the storm.
Additionally, gusty winds between 20 and 40 mph are expected for most of Sunday, which could knock down tree branches and create dangerous conditions for high-profile vehicles. As temperatures drop late Monday into Tuesday, wind chills of up to 15°F are expected, especially along the Highway 82 corridor. Hypothermia is a risk for those exposed to cold for prolonged periods, and sensitive outdoor vegetation may be at risk.
The five-day forecast shows unsettled conditions through Sunday night, with up to an inch of rain possible. Monday and Tuesday will bring calm, sunny weather but quite a bit of wind chill. Highs will only reach 40°F and lows may drop into the mid 20s.
Residents should secure loose items outside, avoid parking near trees and monitor local forecasts for updates. Those traveling should pack emergency supplies and be prepared for possible delays. Stay informed by checking updates on the National Weather Service website or social media channels.
