BINGHAMTON, NY – Lake effect snowfall is expected to intensify across Central New York this weekend, with some areas potentially accumulating more than 30 inches of snow. The National Weather Service has issued a lake effect snowfall warning for Oneida, Madison and Onondaga counties through Sunday evening. Otsego County remains under a Winter Weather Advisory until tonight.
According to the National Weather Service, heavy snowfall combined with changing wind patterns will create hazardous travel conditions, especially along the I-81 corridor and other major routes in the area. Intermittent movement of the ice sheets is expected, with some areas such as northern Oneida County receiving consistent snowfall. Travelers are advised to delay non-essential trips, keep an emergency kit in their vehicles and closely monitor local road conditions.
The forecast for Saturday calls for a high near 26 degrees Fahrenheit, with snow likely to begin in the afternoon. Winds of 10 to 15 mph are expected, with gusts as high as 21 mph, which will reduce visibility. Saturday night temperatures will drop to 18°F, with light snow continuing. On Sunday, the chance of snow will reduce slightly, but conditions will remain cold, with a high around 27°F and a low around 20°F.
Looking ahead, Monday and Tuesday will see mostly cloudy skies with high temperatures in the mid 20s. There is a possibility of snowfall on Monday, but the accumulation will be light. Temperatures will drop to 15°F Monday night, causing icy road conditions.
Residents should prepare for possible power outages and icy roads. Stay updated with alerts from local authorities and plan extra travel time if heading out.
