Wichita, KS – A major winter storm is headed to Kansas this weekend, bringing up to 10 inches of snowfall and significant accumulations of snow. The National Weather Service predicts dangerous road conditions, power outages and hazardous travel from Saturday morning through Sunday evening.

Freezing rain is expected to begin Saturday morning, turning into heavy snow late Saturday night into Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita. Areas around Salina, Topeka and Wichita have a 70-90% chance of at least four inches of snow, with some areas possibly seeing snowfall closer to 10 inches. Up to a quarter-inch of snow accumulation is also forecast, especially in south-central Kansas.

Gusty winds gusting up to 45 mph will further complicate conditions, causing blowing snow and reduced visibility. There is a risk of damage to power lines and trees due to heavy snow and wind. Residents are urged to prepare for possible power outages by avoiding unnecessary travel, securing outdoor items, and stocking up on emergency supplies.

Temperatures will drop rapidly as the storm progresses. Highs on Saturday will be around 36°F and will drop into the teens by Sunday, with wind chills near zero. Monday and Tuesday will be cold, with highs only reaching the low 20s.

Those traveling on major roads like I-70 and US-54 should expect delays and dangerous conditions. Local officials encourage residents to regularly check updated forecasts and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
