Chicago, IL – The Illinois State Police (ISP) reported two squad cars were hit by drivers in DuPage and Cook counties within two days. In both incidents the drivers failed to obey Illinois’ move over law.
The first crash occurred Dec. 31 on I-55 near Woodward Avenue. A 23-year-old Lockport woman rear-ended a parked squad car with its emergency lights on. No injuries were reported, but the driver was charged with driving too fast for the conditions.
The second crash occurred early January 1 on I-57 near 107th Street. Two ISP troopers were responding to a separate accident when a driver struck their vehicles. The 34-year-old driver, of Matteson, was hospitalized and charged with violation of Scott’s Law.
ISP emphasizes that move over laws require drivers to reduce speed and change lanes when approaching emergency vehicles. In 2024, the ISP recorded 27 related accidents, including one fatality.
Officials urged drivers to prioritize safety and follow the law. Fines for violations start at $250.
