INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Light snowfall is expected across central Indiana tonight, causing poor conditions on major roads including I-74. Drivers are urged to use caution as untreated surfaces may become icy overnight.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snowfall will begin after 6 p.m. Thursday, with totals of 1 to 2 inches expected north of I-74 and lesser amounts south of I-74. This light snowfall will taper off by Friday morning, but roads and overpasses may remain hazardous. Motorists should plan for additional travel time during the Friday morning commute.
Friday is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 26°F. However, cooler temperatures will return Friday night, falling to around 13°F. These conditions set the stage for a significant winter storm to arrive Sunday through Monday.
The NWS has issued a Winter Storm Watch for central Indiana, warning of heavy snow and possible snowfall of more than 6 inches. The storm could also bring hail and freezing rain to southern parts of the state. Hazardous travel conditions are expected Sunday through Monday, especially on I-74 and other major routes.
Residents should prepare now by checking vehicles for winter readiness and stocking up on emergency supplies like blankets, food and flashlights. Travelers should monitor updated forecasts and avoid unnecessary trips during the storm.
