ALBUQUERQUE, NM – New Mexico residents should prepare for active weather patterns this weekend, with the potential for severe fire weather conditions and widespread dust storms on Saturday. High winds and low humidity will create dangerous conditions for wildfires and travel hazards on major highways, including I-40.
Record high temperatures are expected Friday across central and western New Mexico, with Albuquerque reaching 62 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. However, a wind change on Saturday will bring winds up to 50 mph, as well as dry conditions that could spread fires rapidly. The fire season watch extends to west-central and eastern parts of the state, urging residents to avoid outdoor burning and secure loose objects.
Flying dust on Saturday will significantly reduce visibility, creating hazardous travel conditions on roads such as I-40 and I-25. The NWS advises drivers to use caution and monitor local updates. By Sunday, cooler temperatures will arrive, bringing a high near 52 degrees and cooler conditions.
Looking ahead, a winter storm could impact New Mexico as early as next week. There is a possibility of snowfall on Tuesday, due to which the temperature will drop to near 20 degrees. Preparations for cold conditions and potential road impacts are strongly encouraged.
