NASHVILLE, TN – Drivers across Tennessee should be prepared for hazardous conditions this weekend as a winter storm is expected to bring a mix of rain, snow and ice to the I-40 corridor starting Sunday morning. Forecasters warned that freezing rain and ice could make travel dangerous, especially in the morning.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Nashville, precipitation is expected to start out as light snow on Sunday morning, changing to a wintry mix and eventually freezing rain. By afternoon the temperature will rise to beyond 40, due to which most of the precipitation will turn into rain. However, areas north of I-40 may experience prolonged periods of freezing rain, increasing the potential for slick roads and hazardous driving conditions.
Sunday night will bring cold air, dropping temperatures below freezing, leading to potentially icy conditions for travelers Monday morning. Winds gusting up to 20 mph can impair visibility and road conditions.
The NWS advises residents to monitor updates as the storm approaches. Travel plans must be adjusted and essential supplies stocked up. If driving is unavoidable, use extreme caution, especially on bridges and overpasses, where ice forms quickly.
The weekend forecast ahead of the storm will be clear, with sunny skies and high temperatures near 40°F on Friday and Saturday. The minimum temperature at night will drop to 20 degrees.
Looking ahead, cooler temperatures are expected to persist through next week, with highs struggling to reach 35°F by Monday.
