Chicago, IL – Snow is expected across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana Thursday afternoon, creating hazardous travel conditions.
The National Weather Service (NWS) warned that snow would develop primarily south of a line from Dixon to Kankakee, continuing into the evening hours. Accumulations of one to two inches are expected, especially in areas highlighted in red and orange on the advisory map, including Kankakee, Pontiac and Rensselaer. Untreated roads will become snow covered and slippery, reducing visibility and making travel challenging.
According to the NWS, travelers should expect delays and are urged to drive with caution. The greatest impact is expected to occur during the evening rush hour. Drivers are advised to reduce speed, increase following distance and keep an eye on weather updates for the latest conditions.
This snowfall marks a significant start to the January winter season, reminiscent of earlier severe January storms in the region.
