BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — An Erie County snow plow went into a ditch and overturned at Lakeview Road and Route 20 in Hamburg on Thursday morning.
The plow was seen on its side in a ditch after going off of the road.
The driver of the plow is OK, Erie County Public Works Commissioner Bill Geary said shortly after the crash happened. There is only one person in county plows.
They are working on getting that plow back in service, and they are bringing another truck into the area to make sure the route stays clear.
“Our drivers are professionals, but these things happen, especially in zero visibility conditions,”
Geary said. “You get a false sense of security when you’re driving through it as soon as the sun comes up, there will be sun out, but when you get into a condition where there is zero visibility and try to make a turn on a street like that, you cut it a little short, there’s an open ditch, next thing you know you’re in the ditch.”
The lake effect storm is bringing heavy localized snow to areas across Western New York, but especially south of Buffalo and northern Chautauqua County. A lake effect snow warning is in effect for Erie, Genesee, Wyoming, Chautauqua, and Cattaraugus counties until 1 p.m. Friday, with 2-3 feet of snow possible in some areas.
