Pittsburgh, PA – Heavy snow is falling in the Pittsburgh area this evening, causing reduced visibility and icy roads. Residents are urged to use caution while driving.
The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh issued a special weather statement warning of heavy snowfall affecting southern Armstrong, Westmoreland, southeastern Butler and other surrounding counties. Doppler radar tracked the ice along a line from Freeport to Perieopolis, moving east at a speed of 25 mph.
According to the NWS, visibility could drop to half a mile in heavy snow and roads could quickly become impassable. Wind gusts up to 30 mph can make travel more complicated. Affected areas include Greensburg, Monroeville, Latrobe and McKeesport. Parts of the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Interstate 376 are expected to see hazardous conditions.
Residents are advised to keep an eye on local weather updates and allow extra time for travel. Drive slowly on untreated roads and keep headlights on for safety.
Be aware of sudden weather changes, as temperatures dropping below zero can worsen road conditions.
