Kansas City, MO – A major winter storm is expected to hit northern Missouri this weekend, bringing freezing rain, snow and freezing cold. Forecasters are warning residents and travelers to be prepared for hazardous road conditions starting Saturday night and continuing through Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, light snow is possible today with minor snow on Highway 36. However, the main weather event arrives on Saturday night, bringing significant snow and ice to the area. Total snowfall amounts remain uncertain but could reach several inches in some areas.
Saturday will start out mostly cloudy with a high around 29°F. By evening, a wintry mix is expected, followed by heavy snowfall overnight. Rain will continue on Sunday, when temperatures will drop significantly, with a high of 24°F and a low of 4°F. Winds from the north may increase travel difficulties due to blowing snow and low visibility.
Residents are urged to secure emergency supplies and stay updated through the weekend. Drivers should check road conditions and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm. Major highways, including Interstate 70 and Highway 36, may be delayed or closed.
Looking ahead, the cold will continue into next week, with high temperatures barely reaching the teens on Monday.
