Northern California Shaken by Earthquake on New Year’s Day – Location Revealed

WPBN: In accordance with the findings of seismologists, a minor earthquake that had its epicenter in Lake County sent a new year’s rattling to certain regions of Northern California.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake made its initial registration as a magnitude-4.7 temblor. It took place at 6:34 p.m. Pacific time.

According to the agency, the earthquake occurred at a depth of slightly more than one mile below the surface of the earth, as determined by seismograph observations.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located two miles to the north-northwest of Cobb, which is a settlement located in the hills to the south of Clear Lake. 70 miles to the west of Sacramento and 27 miles to the north of Santa Rosa was where the epicenter was located.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a ShakeAlert was sent out to people who use cellphones in certain areas of Lake, Sonoma, Napa, and Mendocino counties.

When compared to the magnitude-7.0 earthquake that occurred in December, which occurred forty miles off the coast of Mendocino County, the tremor that occurred on Wednesday was quite minor.

An alert for a tsunami was temporarily activated as a result of the fault slip that occurred on December 5th. A magnitude-5.5 earthquake that occurred in a remote Nevada desert four days later was felt extremely strongly in the Sacramento region.

Despite the fact that the shaking was only slightly felt in certain areas of the Sacramento Valley, there were no reports of injuries related to it.

Those who were closer to the epicenter experienced a more pronounced shaking.

When Kim Fetters, who works at Cobb Mountain Pizza, answered the phone just before the restaurant closed for the day, she stated that the earthquake “shook the building pretty good.”

She remarked, “I was expecting a window to break or something.” Fetters claimed that although she felt the powerful earthquake off the coast last month, the shaking that occurred Wednesday night from a mile distant was “worse” since it was a sudden shock.

Although “a few beer bottles” had dropped to the floor, she said no one was harmed in the pizza parlor.

According to seismologists, earthquakes of magnitudes between 4.0 and 4.9 are typically regarded as light to moderate, while their consequences might differ depending on depth, proximity to populated areas, and local geology.

Earthquakes are common in northern California, especially in places like Cobb and The Geysers, where geothermal activity frequently causes smaller earthquakes. As a result, a 4.7 earthquake is typical but noticeable.

The USGS’ “Did You Feel It?” feature, which solicits public reactions, received over 800 replies about 30 minutes after the tremor. The majority of survey responses were dispersed around the Coast Range’s Mayacamas Mountains region, with a small number in the capital area, primarily in Solano County.

Volunteer reports indicated that shaking was felt over the northern tier of the bay and in San Francisco, some 85 miles south. 22 earthquakes have struck within 50 miles of the epicenter in the past century, according to USGS statistics.

The worst of these was the magnitude-6.0 earthquake that devastated structures in Napa in 2014, the biggest to strike Northern California since the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989.

One person was killed, 200 residents were injured, and about $1 billion worth of damage was inflicted by the 2014 South Napa earthquake.
