GAYLORD, MI – Heavy lake effect snowfall continues across northern Michigan today and is forecast to intensify overnight, causing hazardous travel conditions on M-32 and US-131. Up to three inches of water accumulation is expected with reduced visibility possible in areas affected by ice bands.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, snow showers will continue throughout Thursday and into Friday morning. While light snowfall is forecast during the day, heavy snowfall is expected at night, especially south of the Mackinac Bridge and across northwestern lower Michigan, including Chippewa County. Drivers are urged to use caution as slick and snow-covered roads will make travel difficult.
Today’s high is forecast to reach 26°F, made cooler by west winds of 10 to 15 mph. Tonight, temperatures will settle around 23°F as snow accumulates up to three inches. Snowfall will continue Friday, with another two inches of rain expected and a high near 24°F. Winds will remain strong, with gusts up to 25 mph, which could result in blowing snow.
The weekend forecast shows a brief respite, with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 21°F on Saturday. However, another round of snowfall is possible Saturday night, leaving roads icy until Sunday.
Residents should be prepared for changing conditions and check local updates before traveling. Use extra caution near major thoroughfares such as M-32, US-131, and I-75. Keep emergency kits in vehicles and allow extra travel time on weekends.
