Iowa Residents Should Brace for Weekend Snowstorm: Up to 6 Inches Expected

The Country Herald is a community news platform for Kankakee, Iroquois and Will Counties. Covering breaking local news, sports, lifestyle and events.

Omaha, NE – Snow fell overnight across parts of northeastern Nebraska and Iowa, causing poor road conditions Thursday morning. Travelers are urged to check their routes as snowfall continues since the morning.

According to the National Weather Service, the snow will subside by 9 a.m., but drivers should remain vigilant. There may still be freezing fog and ice accumulations of 1 to 3 inches on roadways, including sections of Highway 275 and Interstate 80. Use extra caution, reduce speed and allow extra time for your journey.

As the storm clears, Thursday afternoon will be mostly sunny with temperatures rising to 33°F. Overnight lows will drop to 19°F, with clear skies keeping roads cold and potentially icy into Friday morning.

Looking ahead, another winter storm is forecast to impact the region beginning Saturday afternoon. This system is expected to bring 6 or more inches of snow to eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, especially along Interstate 80. Winds as high as 20 mph will cause snow to blow and drift, creating hazardous travel conditions.

The National Weather Service recommends preparing for delays if traveling this weekend and carrying an emergency kit with blankets, water and a charged phone. Temperatures will remain cold, with wind chills between -15°F and -25°F expected through Monday.

Residents should monitor updates from local weather services and plan accordingly to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.
