Springfield, IL – A winter storm is set to hit central and southeast Illinois with heavy snow and ice starting late Saturday night.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch, predicting at least six inches of snowfall in affected areas. Snow accumulations, potentially in excess of one-tenth of an inch, may develop south of Interstate 70. Wind gusts up to 30 mph can cause snow drifts and power outages.
According to the NWS, dangerous conditions will peak late Sunday night into Monday morning. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are expected to be dangerous, causing significant disruption to Monday’s commute.
Residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel. If travel is necessary, officials recommend packing a winter safety kit with blankets, water and emergency supplies.
