People across Southern California woke up Sunday morning to thick fog blanketing the region, causing hundreds of flights across the region to be delayed during one of the busiest nationwide travel periods ever.
According to data from flight tracking service FlightAware, 162 flights at LAX were delayed as of Sunday at 10 a.m., by far the most out of any airport in SoCal.
A total of eight flights had been outright canceled as of that time, FlightAware data showed.
At Hollywood Burbank Airport, more than three dozen flights had been delayed as of 10 a.m., but none had been canceled.
Further south, Long Beach Airport and John Wayne Airport sat at 27 and 25 delayed flights, respectively; neither had any flights canceled by 10 a.m.
FlightAware’s general airport delay statistics webpage stated that Long Beach Airport was experiencing departure delays lasting an average of an hour and four minutes and airborne flights were delayed for an average of 36 minutes; the departure delay time is expected to increase as the morning progresses into the afternoon.
Meanwhile, at Ontario Airport, only 11 flights were delayed with two cancellations as of 10 a.m.
The fog began to lift as Sunday morning progressed, but coastal areas will still experience low visibility throughout most of the day, according to meteorologists.
It’s not just SoCal airports that are experiencing delays on Sunday, as FlightAware data indicates more than 5,000 flights within, into or out of the U.S. were canceled as of 10 a.m., with a further 765 canceled.
