BINGHAMTON, NY – Central New York will see a prolonged period of lake-effect snow starting today and continuing through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Heavy snow and high winds are expected, especially in areas north of the New York Thruway, creating hazardous travel conditions.
The NWS reports that snow showers will intensify this afternoon, focusing on Onondaga, Madison and Oneida counties. Snowfall rates in northern Oneida County could exceed two inches per hour, and snowfall could reach two feet by Saturday evening. Drivers should avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas due to low visibility and blowing snow.
Strong westerly winds are expected to continue through Friday, increasing blowing and blowing conditions. Temperatures will drop further this weekend as arctic air enters the region, with highs rising above 20 degrees and lows reaching the teens.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Chenango County until 1 pm today, and additional warnings may be issued for other areas. Travel disruptions are expected along portions of Interstate 81 and the NY Thruway as snow continues to accumulate and conditions worsen.

Even colder temperatures are forecast this weekend, with streaks of lake effect snow moving in to cover more of Central New York. The heaviest accumulations will occur Saturday night into Sunday morning, causing hazardous road conditions.
