On Friday, December 27, 2024, at approximately 4:00 a.m., Harris County Sheriff’s Office patrol units responded to a stabbing at the Providence at Champions apartment complex, located at 5100 West FM 1960. Upon arrival, officers found 28-year-old Gavin Escamilla suffering from a stab wound to the chest. Escamilla was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
The homeowner, who identified Escamilla as her ex-boyfriend, told investigators that he had been following her and had shown up at her apartment after they had been at a club together earlier that evening. After knocking on her door, Escamilla barged in and began arguing. During the altercation, he allegedly placed her in a headlock, but she managed to break free and grab a knife. When Escamilla moved toward her again, she said she stabbed him in self-defense.
Escamilla made it outside the apartment, where he waited until deputies and EMS arrived. The homeowner is cooperating with investigators, and there is a history of family violence between the two, though no charges had been filed against Escamilla prior to the incident. The case is being presented to a grand jury for review.
