Charleston, WV – Unsettled weather will close out 2024 as a disturbance passes through the region, bringing colder air late Tuesday night. This shift will likely produce rain transitioning into snow, primarily affecting higher elevations in northwest Pocahontas and southeast Randolph counties. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for these areas, where 4 to 8 inches of snow could accumulate.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, rain will develop Tuesday night before colder air arrives by early Wednesday. As temperatures drop, precipitation will turn to snow in mountainous regions, with higher terrain seeing the most impact. Forecasts predict mountain highs in the 20s to mid-30s Wednesday, with low temperatures dipping into the 20s.
Lower elevations will experience highs in the 30s to mid-40s, while lows will fall into the 30s. Though snowfall remains unlikely in the lowlands, residents should expect damp and chilly conditions throughout the midweek.
Travelers and residents in affected areas should prepare for hazardous road conditions during this period. The potential for accumulating snow increases in elevations above 3,000 feet. The National Weather Service recommends monitoring updates and adjusting travel plans if necessary.
The Winter Storm Watch will remain in effect through late Wednesday night as forecasters continue tracking the storm’s path. Communities in northwest Pocahontas and southeast Randolph counties should remain alert for additional warnings or advisories.
