Knoxville, TN – Strong winds and cold weather are set to hit East Tennessee Tuesday, accompanied by potential mountain snow. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Wind Advisory for much of the region, warning of gusts up to 45 mph.
According to the NWS in Morristown, the advisory is in effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and includes areas across East Tennessee, southwest Virginia, and portions of western North Carolina. Winds of 15 to 30 mph with stronger gusts are expected to cause tree damage, scattered power outages, and hazardous driving conditions, particularly for high-profile vehicles.
In addition to strong winds, a cold front will bring the potential for mountain snow showers late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Elevations above 3,000 feet, including parts of the Smoky Mountains, could see 1 to 3 inches of snowfall. Rain is forecast to transition to snow by late Tuesday night, with snow showers tapering off Wednesday morning.
Tuesday’s daytime high is expected to reach 57°F in Knoxville before colder air settles in later this week. Temperatures will continue to drop, with below-average conditions predicted through the first week of January.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, exercise caution while driving, and prepare for possible power outages. Travelers heading into higher elevations should anticipate winter weather conditions and adjust plans accordingly.
