Cleveland, OH – A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Northeast Ohio from Wednesday morning through Thursday evening, as lake-effect snow is expected to create dangerous travel conditions. Areas along Interstate 90, including Cleveland, Ashtabula, and Mentor, could see over six inches of snow accumulation. Wind gusts may reach 40 mph, compounding the hazards for New Year’s week commutes.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm will develop as a low-pressure system moves through the region, bringing heavy snowfall and high winds. Snow squalls are predicted to impact morning and evening traffic on Wednesday and Thursday, especially along major highways. The hazardous weather conditions could lead to delays or cancellations, with drivers urged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.

The highest snow totals are expected in areas east of Cleveland, particularly near higher elevations along I-271 and I-90. Temperatures are forecast to drop rapidly, with icy roads increasing the risk of accidents. Residents are encouraged to limit non-essential travel during peak snowfall periods and monitor real-time road conditions through the Ohio Department of Transportation’s website or local radio updates.

By Friday, the storm system is expected to weaken, with lighter snow showers persisting into the weekend. Despite improving conditions, officials recommend keeping emergency supplies, such as blankets and food, in vehicles in case of unexpected delays.
