Binghamton, NY – Scattered rain showers will sweep through the region Tuesday evening, giving way to significant snowfall by midweek. Residents across Central New York are urged to prepare for changing conditions as a long-duration lake effect snow event is forecast to begin Wednesday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, showers will develop tonight, with rainfall peaking between 9 p.m. and midnight. Temperatures will remain above average, reaching highs near 47 degrees during the day before dropping to the upper 30s tonight. On New Year’s Day, rain could persist into the afternoon before transitioning to snow in the evening as temperatures dip to 28 degrees.
Starting Wednesday night, lake effect snow is expected to intensify, with some areas seeing snowfall rates exceeding one inch per hour. The heaviest snow bands may bring accumulations of several feet by the weekend, primarily impacting Cayuga, Onondaga, and Madison counties. Gusty winds of up to 24 mph could create hazardous travel conditions due to blowing and drifting snow.
Drivers are advised to monitor weather updates closely and avoid unnecessary travel during snow squalls. Visibility may drop to near zero in affected areas. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Watch starting Wednesday afternoon.
Thursday through Saturday will remain cold, with daytime highs ranging from the mid-20s to low 30s. Snow showers are likely to persist into the weekend. Residents should check local forecasts for updated information and ensure vehicles are winter-ready.
