New York, NY – Rain showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to move through the New York area Tuesday evening, creating slick road conditions just in time for New Year’s Eve celebrations. Highs will climb into the low 50s during the day before cooler, breezy conditions settle in overnight.
According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest rain will fall after 4 p.m. and continue until shortly before midnight, with up to an inch of accumulation possible in some areas. Motorists on the Long Island Expressway and surrounding roadways are urged to use caution, as visibility could drop during periods of heavy rain. Winds will also pick up Tuesday night, gusting up to 20 mph.
New Year’s Day will bring partly sunny skies and breezy conditions, with a high of 50 degrees. Winds will shift westward at 13 to 21 mph, making it feel cooler. While the chance of precipitation remains low, light showers could linger in the morning hours before clearing in the afternoon.
Looking ahead, the five-day forecast promises mostly sunny conditions through Saturday, with daytime highs in the 30s and nighttime lows dropping below freezing. By Sunday night, a 40% chance of snow reemerges, signaling a possible winter storm early next week.
Residents planning outdoor celebrations or travel for New Year’s Day should prepare for brisk winds and dress accordingly. Keep an eye on updated forecasts for potential changes in weather conditions.
