Duluth, MN – Lake effect snow is sweeping into the South Shore today, bringing frigid conditions and potential hazards into the new year. Accumulations of up to 2 inches are possible in parts of northern Iron County by Wednesday morning. Residents across the region are advised to prepare for icy roads and freezing temperatures.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, northwest winds will drive lake effect snow across the area, with light flurries expected elsewhere. Highs today will hover near 28°F but will drop sharply to single digits by Friday. Wednesday, New Year’s Day, will be mostly cloudy and breezy, with highs around 21°F and gusts up to 15 mph.
By Thursday and Friday, Arctic air will settle in, with daytime highs struggling to surpass 13°F and overnight lows plummeting to -12°F in some areas. Travelers along Highway 2 and other major roadways should exercise caution due to potential icy patches and blowing snow.
The extended forecast shows a brief reprieve from snow by Saturday, though temperatures will remain well below freezing. Residents are encouraged to dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
