Binghamton, NY – Residents across Upstate New York should prepare for several rounds of lake effect snow starting Wednesday night. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton issued a Winter Storm Watch for areas expected to see heavy snowfall through the end of the week.
According to the NWS, snowbands will develop across regions near Lakes Ontario and Erie. Areas including Syracuse, Utica, and Cooperstown could see snow accumulation exceeding a foot in some locations. Winds accompanying the snowfall may reduce visibility, leading to hazardous driving conditions.
The lake effect snow is expected to intensify late Wednesday and continue intermittently through Saturday morning. Forecasters warn that snowfall rates could reach two inches per hour during the heaviest bands. Travel along major highways, including I-81 and I-90, may become treacherous during peak snowfall times.
Officials urge residents to monitor weather updates and prepare for possible delays or disruptions. Drivers should carry emergency kits and exercise caution on snow-covered roads.
The NWS also advises staying indoors during periods of intense snowfall, as frigid temperatures and wind chills could pose risks. Residents near the affected areas should secure outdoor items and clear pathways to minimize potential hazards.
Lake effect snow events are common in Upstate New York during the winter months. The forecasted snow could be among the region’s most significant events of the season.
Stay tuned for updates from the NWS as conditions develop.
