Omaha, NE – Residents in Nebraska and western Iowa should prepare for a mix of snow showers and cold temperatures heading into the new year. Weather conditions are expected to remain calm on Tuesday, but changes are coming for New Year’s Day and the days following.

According to the National Weather Service, skies will clear Tuesday night with lows dropping to the mid-20s. On Wednesday, highs will reach the low 30s under mostly sunny skies, but a chance of snow returns by Thursday morning, especially for northeast Nebraska. Drivers should be cautious as light snow accumulations could make roads slick, including major routes such as Interstate 80.

A quick-moving system on Thursday is expected to bring up to an inch of snow in some areas, with gusty winds making travel hazardous. Another, stronger storm system is forecasted to impact the region this weekend, potentially delivering higher snow totals and much colder air. Daytime highs by Friday will struggle to reach the mid-20s, with nighttime lows dipping into the single digits.

Travelers and residents are advised to monitor updated forecasts and prepare for changing conditions. Make sure vehicles are equipped with emergency kits, and delay non-essential travel if heavy snow develops.

Beyond the weekend, temperatures are likely to remain below freezing, and additional snowfall may occur. The National Weather Service recommends staying informed through alerts and monitoring local road conditions.
