Tallahassee, FL – A powerful Arctic outbreak could sweep across the Central and Eastern United States in early January, bringing bitter cold. The National Weather Service (NWS) warned residents on Monday to prepare for possible hazardous temperatures.
According to the NOAA Climate Prediction Center, the cold front will likely affect areas from the Midwest to the Gulf Coast and Eastern Seaboard from January 7 to January 13. The 8-14 Day Temperature Outlook shows a strong likelihood of below-normal temperatures, especially in the Great Lakes, Tennessee Valley, and Appalachians.
Frozen conditions could damage crops in the Gulf Coast and Florida. Residents in the Southern Plains face potential frozen precipitation and disruptions to travel. The NWS emphasized that updated forecasts will refine details, including specific temperature impacts.
Energy demand is expected to spike as cold air blankets densely populated regions. The NOAA advises families to check heating systems and stock up on emergency supplies, including blankets and non-perishable food. Drivers should prepare for icy roads and carry survival kits in vehicles.
The cold snap could also create challenges for livestock and outdoor workers. Farmers are urged to monitor weather updates and take precautions to protect animals. NOAA advises everyone to use official channels, such as local NWS offices, for accurate weather updates and safety tips.
As the Arctic air approaches, residents should review NOAA’s Winter Preparedness Checklist at www.weather.gov/safety/winter.
