Cheyenne, WY – Southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle are under a winter weather advisory today, with snow and high winds creating hazardous travel conditions. Gusts as strong as 70 mph will impact drivers on I-25 and surrounding areas through Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service, snow accumulation varies by location. The Sierra Madre and Snowy Range are forecasted to receive 6 to 12 inches of snow through tonight, with localized totals higher than 12 inches possible. Northern Carbon County could see 4 to 8 inches, while Dawes County faces up to 3 inches but with localized amounts greater than 6 inches in some areas. Wind gusts as strong as 50 to 70 mph will significantly reduce visibility, especially in open plains.
Blowing snow remains the greatest threat, with limited visibility expected on major highways, including I-25 and I-80. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and ensure emergency kits are packed.
Looking ahead, conditions are expected to improve midweek. Tuesday will see partly sunny skies and high temperatures around 31°F, while winds will calm to 10 mph. New Year’s Day offers breezy, mostly sunny weather with highs reaching 36°F. The warming trend continues through Thursday, though snow chances return by the weekend.
Residents should monitor updates from the National Weather Service and prepare for potential disruptions due to high winds and snow-covered roads.
