Chicago, IL — Dense fog is blanketing parts of northern Illinois this morning, creating hazardous driving conditions on major roadways such as I-80 and throughout the Fox Valley area. Visibility is expected to drop below a quarter-mile in some locations. Drivers should use low-beam headlights, reduce speed, and allow extra travel time to navigate safely.
According to the National Weather Service, the fog will persist through late morning, gradually lifting by early afternoon. Rain is forecast to develop tonight, particularly south of I-80, with heavy rainfall and patchy fog expected through the overnight hours. Gusty winds up to 30 mph will make travel conditions even more challenging.
New Year’s Eve on Tuesday will bring additional rain in the morning, tapering off to a possible rain-snow mix by evening, especially in northern areas. Highs will hover between 36°F and 42°F, with colder air moving in overnight.
By midweek, the region can expect a colder start to 2025. Highs on Wednesday will drop to the 30s, and lows will plummet into the 20s. Thursday and Friday will remain cold, with highs in the mid-20s and lows dipping into the teens.
Travelers are advised to monitor weather conditions closely and adjust their plans accordingly. As the fog and rain clear, icy patches may form, especially on untreated roads and bridges.
