Central Illinois – Dense fog is expected to develop across Central Illinois tonight and persist into Monday morning, creating hazardous travel conditions. Visibility could drop to a quarter mile or less, particularly west of I-55.
The National Weather Service reports the best chances for widespread fog are between 3 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday. The dense fog is attributed to low-level moisture and calm wind conditions, which are ideal for fog formation. Areas west of the Illinois River may see patchy fog earlier in the evening, gradually expanding overnight.
Drivers should exercise caution and prepare for fluctuating visibility during travel. The weather service recommends slowing down, using low-beam headlights, and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles. The fog may cause delays and pose challenges for early-morning commuters, especially those heading north.
The affected areas include portions of Central and Northern Illinois, marked as high-risk zones for dense fog. The National Weather Service urges travelers to monitor local updates and avoid unnecessary travel if possible.
Visibility reductions can quickly impact road safety, especially in rural areas with limited lighting. Motorists should plan extra time for their trips and remain vigilant on less-traveled routes. Conditions are expected to improve by late morning as temperatures rise and the fog begins to dissipate.
Be sure to stay informed on the latest weather developments and drive cautiously through affected areas.
