Texas cheerleader charged with animal cruelty after poisoning classmate’s goat to death

Texas cheerleader charged with animal cruelty after poisoning classmate's goat to death

Cheerleader accused of killing classmate’s goat

Aubrey Vanlandingham, a 17-year-old cheerleader at Vista Ridge High School, Texas, has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty after allegedly poisoning a classmate’s six-month-old goat, named Willy. The incident, described as “deliberate and devastating” by the victim’s family, has sparked outrage in the local community.

Vanlandingham, who served as president of the school’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter, is accused of injecting the goat with pesticide on two separate occasions over a three-day period in October 2024.

Evidence points to premeditation

Prosecutors revealed that Vanlandingham conducted online searches for phrases such as “how much bleach kills a goat” and “poisoning pets, what you should know.” In addition, investigators obtained video footage allegedly showing the cheerleader using a syringe to administer the fatal liquid into the goat’s mouth.

A necropsy confirmed that Willy died from organophosphate intoxication, a common component of pesticides.

“Willy died in my daughter’s arms. It was devastating,” said the goat owner’s mother. “This wasn’t just a mistake—this was deliberate. We want justice.”

Legal and community fallout

Vanlandingham was arrested in November and charged with a felony count of animal cruelty, which carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a $10,000 fine. She was released on a $5,000 bond the same day and is scheduled to appear in court on January 15, 2025.

The Vista Ridge High School community has been deeply affected by the case, with many expressing shock over the actions of a student previously considered a role model in her FFA leadership position.

A call for justice

Animal rights advocates and residents are calling for strict penalties in the case, citing the calculated nature of the crime. Meanwhile, the victim’s family continues to grieve the loss of their beloved goat, which had been a source of pride and effort for their daughter in agricultural competitions.

The case serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of animal cruelty and the need for accountability in such deliberate acts.
