Pennsylvania’s New Year, New Laws: What’s Changing on January 1, 2025

WPBN: As the new year begins, there are a number of new laws that will be implemented across the region on January 1, 2025. These laws will take effect immediately as the new year begins.

A look at some of the new laws that will be passed in 2025 is shown below.

Wage increase of elected officials

The minimum wage of Pennsylvania, which is at $7.25 per hour, has not been raised since 2009. There has been no increase in the minimum wage in the state for the past 15 years.

On the other hand, “lawmakers, judges, and top executive branch officials will get a heftier salary increase in 2025 than the average Pennsylvanian saw over the course of the past 12 months.”

“More than 1,300 officials — including Governor Josh Shapiro, all 253 lawmakers, and all seven state Supreme Court justices” would receive a wage boost of approximately 3.4% in 2025, which stated that this will be the result of one new law.

Updates to the Pennsylvania Safe Haven Law

Safe Haven law, which has been in effect for more than twenty years, has, for a considerable amount of time, made it possible for individuals who are in need to surrender an unwanted child in a secure and lawful manner at various emergency service facilities across the state, including police stations, hospitals, fire departments, and other emergency service places.

Following the passage of a new law, parents will now be able to bring their infants to urgent care physicians during the first 28 days of their child’s existence.

PTSD compensation for those who respond to emergencies

The state’s Worker’s Compensation Act will be brought up to date by a new law that will take effect in 2025. This law will make it possible for first responders to submit a claim for compensation in the event that they sustain a post-traumatic stress injury.

This regulation is scheduled to go into effect one year after it was adopted in October of 2024, according to the bill on the subject.

Availability of cancer biomarker testing for patients

A new piece of legislation has been passed in Pennsylvania that will make it possible for more people to obtain biomarker testing for cancer. This legislation will also assure that the testing will be covered by a greater number of insurance plans, including Medicare, for those who require it.

The American Cancer Society asserts that this kind of testing is beneficial to the preservation of human life, stating that “patients with certain lung cancer types who received biomarker testing and then a targeted therapy saw a 31% reduction in risk of death.”
