Pendleton, OR – Travelers in Oregon should brace for wet and slick conditions leading into New Year’s Eve and Day. The Cascades are expected to see heavy mountain snow, while Pendleton will likely experience fog, light rain, and patchy icy conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, rain chances for Pendleton begin Tuesday evening, with a 30% likelihood after 4 a.m. Wednesday. While roads in town may remain manageable, those heading into the mountains should anticipate snowfall levels dropping to as low as 2,500 feet by New Year’s Day. Travel delays and icy roads are likely.
On New Year’s Day, rain will persist in Pendleton, with temperatures reaching the high 30s. Mountain snowfall could bring accumulations over 1 inch in some areas, creating dangerous travel conditions on highways like Interstate 84 and mountain passes.
By Wednesday night, a mix of rain and snow is predicted for both the lowlands and higher elevations. Snowfall could extend into Thursday morning, with little to no accumulation expected in Pendleton but possible disruptions at higher altitudes.
The National Weather Service advises residents to prepare for changing road conditions, especially in areas west of Pendleton and through the Cascades. Travelers are urged to carry chains, pack emergency supplies, and check weather updates before departing.
Be sure to monitor the latest forecasts as more precipitation is expected Friday into the weekend, with the potential for additional rain and snow.
